ECG staff in Ashanti region justify strike on May Day celebration

Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region have justified the decision to go on strike during the 2024 May Day celebration.

The president of the Senior Staff Union, Yussif Osman, has said that they should not attend the event.

This, according to him, is because the regional minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, did not decide to apologize to his regional director for causing his arrest.

“However, upon further reflection, we came to the conclusion that this is not a program for the Minister, so we decided to attend, but with the caveat that we will not listen to his speech,” Osman said in an interview on TV3, with headquarters in Accra.

ECG and Osei-Mensah workers have been in the news for the past few weeks following a disengagement exercise at the Kumasi Technical University that led to the arrest of Ashanti East CEO Michael Asomani Wiafe.

The workers’ union subsequently declared a boycott of all interactions with the Minister unless an official apology was made and the case was withdrawn immediately.

However, the regional Minister promised not to apologize and explained that Ing Wiafe’s arrest was due to security reasons.
