Auckland police chase: Dramatic scenes as passer-by’s car crashes and couple arrested near hospital

A fleeing car crashed into a pedestrian’s vehicle today during a chaotic chase through Auckland, which began in Greenlane and ended near the city hospital with the arrest of two people.

The saga began around 12.30pm when officers spotted what a police spokeswoman described as a “vehicle of interest” and used their lights to signal the driver to stop.

They did not stop but sped off before colliding with a citizen’s car on the southern freeway on-ramp, Green Lane East.

“Fortunately, no one was injured during this incident,” the spokeswoman said.

When the Eagle helicopter joined the hunt, the chase continued.

Police placed spikes on St Lukes Rd, but this did not stop the fleeing driver, who continued into the city, eventually reaching Grafton Rd, near Auckland City Hospital.

At that time, a witness saw at least eight police cars driving near the hospital before the vehicle stopped on Grafton Rd.

“The two occupants of the vehicle were detained and charges are being considered,” the spokeswoman said.
